Choose the delivery path

The native path needs FLIP Fluids and its external cache. A prepared USD render copy worked without FLIP Fluids, but its USD file remained an external dependency.

What to do

  1. For the native path, move the .blend and complete relative cache directory together; Pack Resources did not include the tested cache.
  2. For the USD path, export and import with FLIP before handoff, then move the prepared .blend and companion USD together.

Native FLIP cache

.blend + complete cache + FLIP Fluids

The fluid surface changed on all three test frames. Missing FLIP froze the saved-frame mesh; missing cache emptied it.

Prepared USD copy

Prepared .blend + companion USD

The test animated without FLIP Fluids or its native cache. Removing the USD froze it on one static frame.

Tested with

FLIP Fluids 1.8.8 Demo on Blender 5.2.0 LTS, Linux x86_64, background Workbench; frames 1–3 of one quick-liquid fixture saved on frame 2.

What it does

FLIP Fluids is a liquid-simulation add-on for creating and rendering fluid, splash, foam, and whitewater effects in Blender.

  • Set up liquid domains, fluid sources, obstacles, and whitewater effects.
  • Bake a simulation to a cache before lighting and rendering the final result.
  • Add the optional preset library or Mixbox color-blending package when a project uses those features.

Project dependencies

Baked FLIP cache

Renderjuice test
Stored as
External directory referenced by the .blend
Needed for
Native FLIP playback and rendering
If missing
The tested surface object had zero vertices on every frame.
Handle it
Keep a separate relative cache beside the .blend and move the complete directory with the project. Pack Resources did not capture the tested cache.

FLIP Fluids enabled

Renderjuice test
Stored as
Add-on installed in Blender
Needed for
Loading each frame from the native FLIP cache
If missing
The tested scene kept a plausible saved-frame surface but stopped animating.
Handle it
Install a compatible FLIP build on the render machine and check separated cached frames.

USD companion file

Renderjuice test
Stored as
External .usd or .usdc referenced by a prepared render copy
Needed for
The add-on-free USD workflow
If missing
The tested prepared copy froze on one static frame, matching the first USD sample.
Handle it
Export and import the simulation with FLIP before handoff, then send the prepared .blend and USD file together.

Symptoms and fixes

The fluid looks plausible but stays on one frame.

Missing dependencies were reproduced in the small test. UI instability comes from publisher guidance and recurring reports.

Check: The native path may lack FLIP Fluids, or a prepared USD copy may have lost its companion file. UI render instability can produce a similar symptom.

Fix: Check three separated frames, confirm the selected delivery path, and use the publisher's command-line render path for large simulations.

The FLIP surface object exists but has no geometry.

Reproduced with 1.8.8 Demo on Blender 5.2.0 LTS, Linux x86_64.

Check: The external native cache was missing in the tested fixture.

Fix: Restore the complete cache directory or update the domain cache path to its new location.

The cache reports access errors or plays the wrong data.

Publisher guidance.

Check: Active caches on cloud-synced or network storage can conflict with file locking and concurrent access.

Fix: Bake and render from a writable local cache, then copy the finished cache for handoff.

Alternatives

Prepared USD render copy

The render machine cannot install FLIP Fluids and the project can use Blender 5.2 or newer for the preferred export path.

Tradeoff: Preparation still needs FLIP, the USD remains external, and viewport-loaded geometry and attributes need review before export.

Alembic export

A mesh-oriented pipeline already depends on Alembic and does not need full FLIP export coverage.

Tradeoff: The publisher now prefers USD. Alembic carries fewer attributes and needs careful FPS and time settings.

Updates that affect this workflow

  1. 1.8.6 March 26, 2026

Added USD export and Linux Flatpak compatibility.

USD became the publisher's preferred add-on-free delivery format.

  2. 1.8.7 July 14, 2026

Added Blender 5.2 support, incremental USD saving, and cache-loading improvements.

Use this release or newer for Blender 5.2 and review USD overwrite behavior.

  3. 1.8.8 July 27, 2026

Fixed domain deletion, an edit-mode crash, and missing standard preset shaders.

This is the current release and the Demo version used in the Renderjuice test.

Install and start

Install

  1. Download the product or Demo distribution ZIP. A GitHub repository source ZIP must be built before Blender can install it.
  2. Install the distribution ZIP without unpacking it, enable FLIP Fluids, and run Complete Installation or restart Blender.
  3. Save preferences, confirm the first FLIP operation works, and install the preset library or Mixbox only when the project needs it.

First use

  • Create a FLIP Fluids domain and assign fluid, obstacle, and inflow roles to the scene objects.
  • Choose the simulation and whitewater settings, then bake the cache locally.
  • Scrub the baked result and render a local frame before copying the cache alongside the scene.
